The Kasidah of Haji Abdu ElYezdi edition by Sir Richard Francis Burton Children eBooks
The Kasidah is a must-read for anyone serious about Richard Francis Burton's life and work. Spiritually, he was born Anglican, converted to Islam (though his family denies it), married a Roman Catholic, and even went so far as to visit Salt Lake City to see about polygamy (note: he was unhappy that LDS Church members abstain from alcohol). As his "great" formal poem, the Kasidah gathers together all of these influences and gives readers that glimpse into the spiritual view of Burton. Strong elements of Sufism are found throughout, but Kurdish, Persian, and Hindustani influences abound as well.As poetry, it is less-than-exceptional; even so, its historical and literary value comes from its role as a compliment to his many travel episodes (themselves also largely neglected today).
